15 Digital Safety Tips From Girl Scouts

“Friendly and Helpful, Considerate and Caring, Courageous and Strong” – these are not just words from the Girl Scouts law but how the amazing young ladies who commit to scouting try to live. I had the privilege of discussing Digital Safety with some of the members of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri last night, as they are working on their Netiquette Badge. It was a great night. We had lively discussion and caring ideas about how to keep their online world a positive place.

Here are the 15 tips they came up with that we wanted to share with you. Follow these and make your online world a more positive place!

  1. Always think before you post anything – is it nice, appropriate, fair, and safe.
  2. Don’t share any personal information online, even accidentally.
  3. Never say or do anything online that you wouldn’t want said or done to you.
  4. Don’t accept friends or followers you don’t know in real life.
  5. Before posting a picture or a comment, ask yourself, “would I want my Grandma to see this?”
  6. Know that not everything you see online is true or honest.
  7. Make sure the pictures you post are appropriate.
  8. Use emojis wisely, they could be misunderstood.
  9. Make sure what you type is what you mean to say.
  10. Keep your profiles private.
  11. Tell a parent or a trusted adult if something makes you feel uncomfortable or weird, or if you’re being bullied.
  12. Proofread before you hit send.
  13. When emailing, use a kind beginning and let the person know you care about your message to them.
  14. When posting pictures, pay attention to the background and make sure you’re not sharing personal information accidentally.
  15. Use non identifiable pictures for your profiles, since anyone can see those, protect your identity.

Thank you to the ladies of Troops 2556, 3686, 878, 830, 1691, and 504. It was great being with you and I learned a lot too! Keep up the great work!
