Back to School Tips

Where did the summer go? Kids are starting back to school already and we’re not even half way through August. One of the highlights of my summer was a visit from a small group of Girl Scouts from Indiana. They were visiting St. Louis (our home) and wanted to do fun and educational things. We managed to combine fun with Internet Safety Education when they visited our office.

Troop #2380 from Monrovia, Indiana are typical teen girls who love their phones and social media. We had great conversations about the good and the bad sides of the Internet. Since we partner with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, I was able to help these girls earn the Netiquette Badge in their time here. One of the requirements was for the girls to come up with their own set of Safety Tips to be shared with others in their community. I think the girls did a great job! Here are their very thoughtful tips:

  1. Don’t talk online to people you don’t know in person
  2. “Like” and “follow” only your friends
  3. Let your parents check your computer
  4. Don’t go on sites you’re not allowed to see
  5. Never meet anyone you talk to online unless you already know them and your parents know about it
  6. Don’t send pictures to people you don’t know
  7. Don’t take pictures you’re not supposed to
  8. Don’t think you know it all about being online
  9. Tell your parents if your friends are talking to people they don’t know
  10. Don’t give in to your friends and do things you know you shouldn’t do online
  11. Ask you parents before you go into a new online site or game
  12. Tell your parents your passwords and don’t change it without telling them.

We agreed it’s not always easy to follow all of these rules, but so important to keep ourselves safe.
