Technology Tips for the New Year

Have you given up on your resolutions yet? It’s never too late to make technology resolutions. INOBTR has been on the road – well actually we’ve been “on the air” the last two weeks sharing tips and resources with folks from all over the country. Why not try to make 2014 the year your family controls its technology and not vice versa?

Last week we participated in a webinar with the wonderful folks at School Research/CyberBully Hotline where we discussed “Helping Students Understand Their Digital Footprint”. We co-presented with Tina Meier of the Megan Meier Foundation. Tina and I are passionate about helping kids see the potential dangers of the Internet and finding ways to use this amazing technology safely. There were over 350 K-12 Professionals representing almost half a million students across our country trying to keep up and help lead the kids in their community.

Here are the 7 Tips for Parents and educators that we shared and a list of Resources to help you stay current.

This week began with a visit to the Reality Check Nation Show. We spent 3 hours with Sean, John and DC talking about who is on the other end of the devices your children are using. This lively discussion included Chris and Brigid, detectives from the Missouri-Internet Crimes Against Children task force, and Donya, a Child Exploitation Investigator from the United States Attorney’s Office of Eastern Missouri. Together we shared real stories of real people (kids and adults) who have been the victims of online exploitation. We talked about the things we as educators and parents can do to help protect our kids.
